DOUG HILL RESIDENCE
San Diego, California
Located in the Santaluz community of San Diego, the Doug Hill Residence is a 6,500-square-foot custom home designed around the relationship between interior space, courtyard, and landscape. An entry courtyard anchors the home, with glass galleries framing views inward and outward, dissolving the boundary between inside and out. Clean architectural lines and a generous open floor plan engage the golf course beyond while supporting both everyday living and effortless entertaining. The design reflects the understated elegance of Santaluz with a quiet confidence that feels rooted in its setting.
Design Challenges
Santaluz Design Review Committee: The design was developed in close coordination with the review process, refining materials and massing to satisfy committee requirements while preserving the integrity of the original design intent.
Square footage constraints: Working within prescribed limits, the design maximizes livability and spatial generosity through proportion, ceiling height, and the borrowed volume of the courtyard and landscape.
