Rancho Santa Fe , California
The Hacienda Halcones project transforms a California ranch-style home into a refined Spanish Colonial residence inspired by the legacy of Lillian Rice. A 1,000-square-foot addition and full remodel introduced a courtyard, hand-applied plaster, ironwork, and carefully considered eave detailing, architectural elements that evoke the quiet, enduring elegance of the region's early estates. The result honors the character of the original structure while giving the home a presence that feels rooted and timeless.
Design Challenges
Adding to an existing structure - The addition was designed to read as original, integrating new construction with the existing home through consistent materiality, proportion, and detail rather than contrast.
Site and topography - The sloping site was engaged as an organizing element of the design, shaping the relationship between the courtyard, interior spaces, and the landscape beyond.
